4/22/11 CINEMATORIALIST: The Style of "The Hours"
"The Hours" is kind of a mixed bag - alternately dreary and glorious, thoughtful and overtly sentimental, but it's a movie I'd recommend to most people, if you're into the mystery of the feminine psyche and all that. But the visuals are splendidddd and the costumes are no exception. I for one really loved the simplicity and dreaminess of the Woolf-period.
I call this "wispy elegance". Love the slightly disheveled chignon, the askew necklace, the brooch, and the orange drop earrings. Everything is so subliminal and adds to the look of the character, never taking away from Nicole Kidman's hypnotic gaze. Colors of pink and orange highlight her English-rose complexion.
Other looks that combine off-white and simple accessories (beads, a scarf of magnificent hue) to create casual, effortless elegance:
The costume designer here is Ann Roth, who is currently 80 years old! and judging by her CV, one of the hardest-working (113 movies) and still in-demand costume designers in Hollywood. She started out with contemp (Midnight Cowboy) but has lent her eye to mostly period fare as of late from The English Patient to Mamma Mia and Mildred Pierce.
Roth has repeat credits with Meryl Streep, having dressed the grand woman in 11 movies now. Coincidence or power backing? In second place is Nicole Kidman, who she's worked with 4 times, all of them in the last decade.
This is her IMDB photo. What a dame. I love stylish old ladies. It just serves as a reminder that you can still hold your own look even if you're not young anymore. I'll do a future post on this.
Some of her looks from other movies she's done.
Roth certainly has an inclination for head-wreaths and white gowns....
Along with bold pops of color. I always thought that Matt Damon's swim trunks in The Talented Mr. Ripley were a stroke of genius. It says so much about his character.
